Owen Shott, owner of Jacksonville Running Company has been a great asset to our local running community for years. Sharing his passion for running by making sure we’re all laced up with the proper shoes. He has recently taken up triathlons and proven that he’s more than a great runner. This month he’s headed to the World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. For some reason I have a feeling this new passion may lead to a Jacksonville triathlon shop. Who knows…
Q: You’ve always been an avid runner, what made you start competing in triathlons?
A: I was looking for a new challenge. I felt like I hit a plateau with running and I really love testing myself. Also trying to master all 3 disciplines makes it that much more challenging.
Q: Although you haven’t been competing in triathlons for very long, you have quickly risen to be a top competitor. What do you attribute your success to?
A: A perfect storm I guess. There’s nothing specific just a lot of things done right. Biggest secret is having a solid support team around you. Store, coach, training partners, maintenance, friends and family… I wish there was one magic awesome.
Q: David Smith quotes you as saying “THIS SUCKS! I’LL NEVER DO ANOTHER HALF AGAIN!” last year at the Augusta Half Ironman. For David’s sake, I won’t mention that you were passing him while saying this… This year you’re competing in the 70.3 HALF Ironman World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, September 9th. What changed your mind?
A: It is funny how you forget pain so quickly… I feel like I’m the type of person that is always trying to figure out what went wrong and how do I fix or improve on it. I can have my best race and I’ll still be trying to figure out how to take off a second or two.
Q: Every Athlete loves a good cheat meal! Where’s your favorite place and what do
A: Lol… If you been on my Facebook during my off season you would laugh, but if I had to pick one thing it would be Ale House and Captain Jack’s Buried treasure. YUM!
